Barney, I haven't done a crossing, but I did do a 10-night Caribbean sailing on QM2. I loved every minute of it. It's elegant but accessible and friendly. One of the buffet areas transforms into a different specialty restaurant each night, at no extra charge. Be sure to try them all.
I know folks who have done transatlantics, and did them repeatedly. There are many, many activity offerings during the day, everything from classes in computers and drama, to concerts to lectures. Of course, you shouldn't miss any of the Planetarium shows. They're excellent.
