we were in nassau last week. decided to go to the atlantis beach and take a water taxi to get there. they packed the water taxi so tight with people it was unsafe. I didnt see any life jackets anywhere. If the water taxi had started taking on water there is no way we would have been able to get off safely. no way...take a regular taxi, much safer...
You are so correct. We went by land taxi over and decided to take the water taxi back...big mistake.
These are very small boats where people are not only packed in...but packed into an "enclosed" space. They are not like the open tenders that we are use to.
On Pride 2 weeks ago, we were warned in a shore informational meeting NOT to venture on water taxis, as 2 cruiser deaths have been reported with them. The cruise director stated that the seas in Cabo are rocky and when the taxi let the passengers off, the fatalities happened. That was enough for me to hear.

We had no problem with the water taxi in St. Maarten. But, we may have just gotten lucky that day.
I've been to St maarten also and used the water taxi. We had no problem with this one either. There are good piers to get on and off and the ride is fairly short. However the walk would do you good
I was in Nassau 10 years ago and we took the water taxi over to Paradise Island. It was OK but on our way back the taxi was held up by something (I can't remember) but what I do remember is running like crazy to catch our ship since the taxi was so late! We were the last to reboard! Talk about close call! (I guess I could think of worse places to get stuck!!!!!)
