Since my stop in Progreso was canceled, I am now looking at going to Tulum while in Cozumel. How long does this trip realistically take and can it be done on your own - rather than through the cruise line? (I want to make sure I have time to visit Carlos 'n Charlies)

Hi John,
The trip to Tulum is an all-day excursion (getting to Tulum will require a 45 minute ferry ride + another 45 minutes by land once you are on the mainland), but since your ship will now be staying in Cozumel until 10:00 PM, you will certainly have time to visit Carlos 'n Charlies upon your return. There are a number of great reviews and suggestions on our sister site PortReviews that you might find helpful:
http://www.caribbeanportreviews.com/Cozumel.htm

Also, I might suggest that it is worth the money to take a private tour of the ruins, rather than the ship's tour (lots of wasted time in a large group). Here is a link to the details about booking a private tour:

Hope this helps -
Nancy

Thanks Nancy. I read the reviews and think we will take your advice and visit Tulum on our own. My fiancee and I are both adventurous and somehwat independent so being herded onto a bus with loads of other people is defintely not my idea of a pleasant experience.

There are a few pictures from Tulum on my website.

This site is not anything more than a way for friends to see some pictures. It did not have a lot of effort put into design.
