I would like to know the answer to this one also. No one seems to say much about Jamaica other than to stick with the cruise excursions. Surely there must be another way to go!
Sure, there are excursions through privates that you can hire.
In Jamaica, you don't fool around. That is the only destination that we, as a family, have cruised to, and have felt in fear of our lives.
You don't venture off on your own and you don't go off the beaten path. Excursions through the ship don't take any chances... and that's why you're safe.
I would only use a ship tour as well. Even with a ship tour in 96 I was offered to buy drugs 3 times. Not beating up on Jamaica, it is one of the most beautiful islands I have ever seen. But they have some problems there.
Example of differences in islands:
On Jamaica I asked a local to take our picture, he then said I owed him $3. Being a rather inexperienced cruiser at the time, I asked a local after on Grand Cayman to take our picture. I then tried to hand the lady $3 thinking that was what I should do. She said "Don't insult me".
Dwayne, just to add to your post... a good point that you made.
When we awoke in the morning in Jamaica and looked out from the ship, I must say that, geographically speaking, Jamaica is breathtaking. I couldn't wait to disembark the ship to sightsee and to get a better glimpse of the beautiful terrain of the country.
As we rode in our tour guide's van to Dunns River Falls I thought the shore line was magnificent.
To see the filth, garbage and disgust up close ruined it for me.
Just to clarify, Jamaica is a beautifully landscaped country.
tesi, I'm not sure. It is a loooong ride to D.R.F. I believe it took us 2 hours from Montego Bay. The Ochos Rios port is very close. Others on here may have taken a cab. Although, the cab fare may be a small fortune. You can always book through the cruise line.
