I have friends who were supposed to leave on a western caribbean cruise today. Anyone have any idea how these ports fared in the wake of Emily and if all ships have been diverted from that area this week?

Sherry,
Not sure what cruise line or ship they are sailing, but since Emily made a direct hit on Cozumel I know ships that were planning to call on her today have cancelled that port. Some cruise lines are waiting on assessment damage reports before cancelling the port later in the week. I haven't heard anything about Costa Maya, but being further south - may not have been severely impacted.

I posted this message on the RC forum in response to a question, but thought it might be helpful here as well. There was a message from the owner of Nacchi-Cocum (a Cozumel beach complex) on another cruise board and he indicated that Cozumel faired better than expected. Although there was significant damage to the island, everything was improving quickly and he expected to be open for business in 7-10 days.
