passports needed at ports?

We are going to the Carribean in Feburary. Are you required to take your passports off the ship to port with you? Or do you just need your ship ID card? I'm asking because if we do need to take everything, I will have to get some type of waterproof carrying case for the passports. Thanks!

We never take our passports with us when in the Caribbean. However, we do have color copies of the identity part of our passports which we bring, along with driver's licenses and of course the cruise cards. You will need the cruise card and a government issued photo ID to return to the ship. This is what the driver's license is for. The copy of the passport is for if something happens and we either miss the ship, or get into some sort of trouble. We leave the original passports in the safe.

We do exactly what Dave and family do. I'd also suggest bringing a copy of the ship's daily schedule with you, as it will include the name of the port agent, should you run into trouble.
