Posted a question about what to do in St. Maarten/St. Thomas, then read someone's suggestion about a Segway tour. Could my 70 lb. 12 y/o handle this? Anyone else done this? I have arthritis in my neck and falling would do me no good at all, how managable is this? I bike, snowshoe, any watersport, so I am not crippled, but a fall would do more to lay me up than the average person. Laurie

While I think they have weight and age restrictions, it won't matter. The Netherlands has recently banned Segways from all public roads, sidewalks, etc., and this ban includes St. Maarten. Not sure if they have Segways on the French side.
Let me add that this ban may be revised. I also read that the Dutch were working on a plan to modify or rescind the ban. Royal Caribbean still shows this tour as available. The only restrictions are 10 years old and no one over 300 pounds. I assume these restrictions are true for all cruise lines.
Hello. We did the segway tour in cozumel. I thought they were akward at first. After a few minutes practicing, I got the hang of it. I saw no one fall. I never felt like I was going to fall. I did feel that you couldn't really look around and sightsee while you drove it. It is VERY easy to lose track of how close you are to the person in front of you, especially if they slow down, and you don't realize it. I felt I had to pay more attention to my driving, than sightseeing. It was fun, I don't think I would do it again for a sightseeing tour. Hope this helps, Lil' Lori
Hi! We did the Segway excursion on St. Maarten on November 30, 2006, and had a lot of fun with it. We are in our early 60's. Our adult children were with us and thought it was the best excursion that we did. Of course, because the eight of us were together, it was comical and fun. No one tipped over or ran into anything or anyone! Except the tour guide--she ran into a garbage can!
One suggestion--if you decide to do this, do the early morning excursion. We were on RCCL and booked it on the ship and went on the 8:00 AM (or something like that!) excursion. It was nice because there was no one on the boardwalk and we could move around without tourists being in the way. It wouldn't be nearly as much fun if you had to dodge people. We didn't go far on them, just from one end of the boardwalk to the other end and on the beach a little, so sightseeing wasn't an issue. I would agree with Lil' Lori that you couldn't sightsee and drive one.
When we were done with the Segways, we took a van to Marigot and went shopping. The bazaar at Marigot has many unique items and we all enjoyed that, too.
