Okay. I admit it. I love Jamaica. We always stay with a tour for safety reasons and try to have compassion for the desperate locals trying to (extort) make a buck. But, having never been to Mo bay you guys are actually scaring me! We booked a river tubing adventure, through the ship--which we don't usually use the ship's tours--to be on the safe side and wonder now if we should just stay on the Liberty instead. Our kids (14 & 20) want to get off in case we can't do our thing on Cayman the next day due to high seas (which has never happened to us: we are probably due!). We have tubed on the White River at Ocho, but never at Mo bay.

Laurie,
First of all, this is the last thread about Montego Bay in which I am going to participate. I have been there on more than one occasion. Unlike most ports that start poor and then become more advanced with the increased influx of tourists, "Mo Bay" has decidedly entered a category that I call Fourth World Country. We have had exhaustive reviews and commentary of this much maligned port and, to be honest, the scores are mixed. Some like it and some hate it. My simple opinion is that if a port has a history of violence and crime, then I am just going to err on the side of caution and enjoy the relaxed safety of a relatively empty pool deck.

I can't discourage you from going on an excursion, especially one through the ship. I would go and then come back to the ship. I know you'll be ok on your excursion, just stay with the group and don't go out on your own afterwards. Like drlivingston states, it's not a port that has done much with a great potential. Best wishes and have a wonderful cruise!!

we loved montego bay. We went a tour thru the ship and tehn shopped afterwards. we never had a problem and had a great day there. I went with my mother and everyone treated us very nice. We did the Rose Hall Plantation, i think. I would hate for you to stay on the ship and not see any of the area, it is a very beautiful place. Of course there are bad areas, but if you are on a tour you are very safe. Enjoy!
