I used good quality sport sandles (eg Nike, Merrell, etc) that have strong velcro or other straps. The straps keep the shoes on your feet and the soles of these sandles are usually suited to activity and good for grip and keeping your feet safe from rocks.

I used water shoes. The rocks are quite slippery. I think some of the pushiest vendors are as you exit the falls at the top. I was on a ship tour as well and was offered drugs several times at a stop to shop on the way. Not what I was shopping for. The falls themselves are pretty awesome and well worth doing at least once.

Dunn River Falls is a must see. We did it twice with the ships. Bring your own water shoes or very sturdy strong sandals with velco that is not affected by water. Rocks are slippery. Carnival and RCCL were great. They had their photographers in the falls taking pictures of us and so we did not have to worry about our cameras. If you do not bring water shoes, you will have to rent there for $5 a person. Get your own at Walmart. Also, we still had to pay a guide to take us up the falls. Ship tour brought us by bus to the falls and then we had to pay a guide to take us up (well I guess we would say tip the guide) which we did. Everything for money - remember poor island. Make sure you keep your kids together even the teenagers as you go up because when you get to the top you have to go through their Shanty Town and that is where you get hassled mega time. They practically pull you into their little stalls. Even with two hunking firefighters, we were still being pulled in. I am going out on a limb but I felt safer in Naples Italy than I did in Jamaica so stay together and go with your ship tour. Say No to any offer of anything because nothing is free really. Have a great time.

To the person who saved some $$ and took a cab: Had they turned down and alley and "allowed" an associate of theirs to "surprise" them and rob you, what would you have done? This happens to cruise passengers. They know there is no penalty: you will not forfeit your cruise to stay there and testify, will you? Lots of places in the Carib you can do safely on your own: Cayman, Cozumel, St. Thomas--among others. But not Jamaica. We had a native tell me she and her husband will not even walk past the ship's terminal on their own.

I took the excursion through the ship but it was the one that had a boat take you to the falls. There was music & maybe a couple of drinks too. I like taking the boat so you get a beautiful view & you still get some sun. When we got back we walked into town & did some shopping. There's a nice little mall right by the dock so you don't even have to go into town unless you want to. I didn't get hassled this time or offered drugs. I know people that brought some back on the ship with them though.

A few years ago two spring breakers got to spend the night as guests of the Jamaican law enforcement community. We got to see them and their families waiting on the pier when we docked on Cozumel. The young men said it was the scariest night of their lives. Looking at the Dad's faces as they were waiting to reboard I think the scarey experiences were only just beginning in their household.
