Have these been a problem for anyone vacationing in the Caribbean? If so, how did you deal with them? Do the local authorities spray the beach with insecticide? I would have a nervous breakdown if I looked down while at the beach and saw critters crawling on my feet and legs...

lol fivepoints... I have never had a problem with either of them. I am more worried about critters in the water than on the sand. (blasted sea urchins!)

I have more problems with sand fleas and the no see-em's on Cape Cod than I have ever experienced in the Caribbean.
The only horrible experience we have ever encountered was coral reef poisoning in Cozumel. Now, that was nasty. Bugs or insects, never.
Maybe I've just been lucky.

Lounge lizards are more prevalent than sand fleas and sand flies combined. More dangerous, too; all kinds of diseases.

NCL's private island GSC has a lot of sand flies and the best measure against them is simply baby oil. Believe me, it works great!

That explains one reason why it is so easy to love and pamper house pets, like my dog Batman!
Some humans can REALLY do some horrible stuff.
