We're thinking of doing the Pub Crawl excursion off of our RCCL cruise in late September. In the customer reviews I've read, (the customer reviews are the only ones I care about; everything else is just advertising) I'm hearing a common thread. Lot's of folks say some variant of "if you're into bars, I guess you'd like it."
Well, folks, I've been known to belly up to the old cantina rail from time to time and, well, I do like bars. What I want to know (from a cruiser, not a travel agent or bar website) is, what bars or sections of town are best for hoisting a frosty pint? Which ones are too touristy? Which one's are particularly fun (even in September, not the high season)? Which ones are too crowded/expensive/etc. Also, would we be better off just walking or taking a taxi to the right part of town, or turning ourselves over to an excursion pub crawl tour guide.
All opinions welcome!
Note: Factors to consider. My wife and I are in our early forties, but we act younger. We like to make noise, drink and have fun, but we're not looking for a wild naked party, just a fun, noisy bar.)
Ah! You have hit upon one of my favorite pasttimes in Key West. But, you might want to be careful ruling out responses from travel agent's - some of us have seriously studied the art of knowing how to party. First, without question the most "touristy" pubs in Key West are Sloppy Joe's, the Hard Rock and Hog's Breath Saloon. (I still must admit to having an absolutely fantastic time at both Hog's Breath and Sloppy Joe's). These will definitely be stops on the Pub Crawl. However, you really don't need to go on the excursion to do some serious bar hopping. Just walk down Duval Street and there are numerous choices. In addition to those I mentioned - some of my other favorites include Irish Kevins', Rick's and Captain Tony's. You might want to check out this website: http://www.pubclub.com/keywest/pubclub.htm.
As for taxi - no need - Key West is very compact and everything is within walking distance (at least for your walk into town - it depends on the # of stops you make as to whether a taxi may be the best way to return to
the ship - VBG).
Thanks very much! That website is a very good resource!
Also, hopefully, I didn't offend such a helpful travel agent as yourself. I do appreciate the level of knowledge and experience that a good travel agent brings to the table. But I'm sure you would agree that when you're doing your vacation research, it pays to be careful that recommendations are based on genuine information rather than how much commission a person might get for selling you a package.
That said, I tend to believe what you say, as you are not making money from me, just being very helpful! Thanks again!
There is a bar right across the street (Duval) from Sloppy Joes named Rick's Bar. I watched an entertainer there named "Uncle Bob" who had to be one of the best bar entertainers I have ever seen. He is a Key West native and the more drinks folks buy him the more entertaining he becomes. You might not like him if rowdy songs and jokes don't strike your funny bone. He isn't X rated, but might get an "R".
