My daughter's ship is now calling on San Juan again. She had changed her phone service from Verizon to US Cellular when she was home last and asked specifically if she was covered for San Juan. She had been free on Verizon from San Juan. They said she was; just got her phone bill and $50 for 22 min to NH. Buyer beware I guess.

Something is definitely not right. I have Verizon and made a phone call from San Juan to Michigan and was charged nothing. This was a couple years ago. Either your daughter was misinformed and her phone plan doesn't cover San Juan, or I'm wondering was she physically on land in San Juan when she called. If the ship was docked and she called while still on the ship, perhaps it may have gone through the ship's satellite?

We have Verizon and spent a couple of days in Old San Juan before our cruise a year ago and made several calls home with no charges added. Best to check (twice to get it right) with the company before using on a trip I guess.

Sounds to me like US Cellular lied to her. Maybe you could call them and tell them, since they lied about that, you'd like to switch her services back to Verizon. I'm sure there's a contract, but lying (misrepresenting the facts) should negate the contract.

If the coverage map on the US Cellular website is correct, it doesn't show any coverage outside the U.S. mainland. I agree with Penny - they lied, or at least were ignorant of the facts and therefore the contract should be voided.

Sometimes the cell companies tell you just half the story. While you may have the actual air time included at a certain destination, they don't tell you that there is a separate roaming charge that can be very expensive per minute.

Or (to add to what Sandy stated) they heard you ask them if they have coverage in San Juan (which they do) but they failed to tell you it was not included in their plan. I would call them and complain... it most likely will get you no where but maybe they will waive the fee....

Believe it or not my TracFone worked in San Juan the last time I was there. It did count double minutes for roaming though. I had a Motorola then that was superior to the Samsung I have now. I would definitely call them up and complain about it.

I have Sprint and have made many calls while in port in San Juan (as well as on the ship) and never paid anything. I have also used it from St. Thomas without any issues.

Thanks everybody for the comments and info. When she was on Verizon there was no charge, She did call US Cellular and they were less than sympathic. But knowing that Sprint and Tracfone also work in San Juan will give us some options and bargining power when she returns home. We will be visiting the store, I sure hope it is ignorance and not out and out lying, we shall see. How they respond may well determine if she returns to Verizon or tries Sprint or tracfone. Good tip to look at coverage at the web site, we didn't think of that just took their word for it. We will be checking the web this time.

Love this site. All kinds of good information here
