My husband and I visited Cozumel on our honeymoon cruise and loved the mayan ruins, but this time we will have 3 teenagers (13, 15 and 16) and our almost 2 year old (she'll be 21 months at that time) so with the baby we are more limited. These are the excursions we are interested in can anyone offer an opinion:

Key West - none. we want to just walk around and shop. Is the area where the boat docks closes enough to where we could walk or would we HAVE to take some tour to get into the town or a private taxi? There will be a total of 8 in our group.

Belize - Most Interested in the XXunantunich Mayan Site anyone been there?

Other low key ideas were Altun Ha & Belize City Tour (but we heard city tour wasn't much) or Altun Ha & River Wallace tour or Belize Zoo & City Tour.

Cozumel - Our last experience with Cozumel was not a pleasant one. We were ripped off at every turn. Mayan tour charged 1.50 per person to not have to walk to the entrance (only they didn't tell us the entrance was around a bin and 50 feet away) there was a fee to video tape, a fee for the bathtrooms (including .25 for two squares of bath tissue). We also didn't like having items shoved in our face as we walked along so......this time I was hoping for something a bit more peaceful.

Top pick - Passion Island Beach Adventure w/lunch

Other ideas - Xcaret Park or Cozumel Highlights with a Shopping Guide.

Any info is helpful,
Lynn and Rob

Cruise ships can only dock in two places at Key West - downtown or at the Navy base. Downtown is better, but even if you dock at the base the cruise line will provide complimentary transportation to and from town via the Conch Tour train - which is really some open air cars pulled by a modified truck. It is quite pleasant. If you dock downtown, you will be right in the middle of things as soon as you leave the ship.

We went to the Belize Zoo. It is interesting but the ride is long and there isn't much in the way of refreshments at the zoo. When we were there, the restrooms were outhouses....really rustic.

You say you were ripped off at Cozumel, but your comments indicate you did a mainland tour to Tulum. Is that the case? I say this because Cozumel itself is a great place and I have never been pressured there.

I would avoid the Cozumel highlights tour and just go out on my own. It is quite safe and you'll see more on your own.

Xcaret is fine, but it eats up lots of time and with the exception of the cave tubing you can duplicate most things done at Xcaret on the island of Cozumel.

Dave,
Thanks for the info. Yeah you are right technically we went to "Tulum" not really ripped off because it was just a few dollars here and there, it was more just the constant hands out for anything and everything, can't describe the experience, but we (my husband and I) just weren't comfortable with that whole experience.

Honestly I am leaning towards the beach trip for Cozumel or the shopping outing.

Thanks for the info on Key West so either way we should have no problem getting to and from the ship on our own.

Actually in Cozumel you can rent a van, since there are so many of you for around $100.00 or so, haggle with them on the price. Its very easy to get around the island, one road and it circles back into town and back to the port. This way you can see the back side of the island, get some great shopping and visit the beaches on your own at your own pace. We have done this 4 times..our favorite time was when there were 4 of us and we rented a jeep. Had a blast.
