Well, you know the word "tangent" comes from the Latin term "tangens" which means... touching.
P.S. The musical definition of "tangent" is an upright pin in a keyboard instrument. hmmm

Seems like there might be an architectural or geometric reference as well but that isn't quite as interesting.

Dr. L., your depth of knowledge is truly astounding. If I asked 100 musicians what a "tangent" was, 99 would say it is "going off on someone or something". I know only because I played harpsichord and also had to raplace many "tangents"on my Fender Rhodes piano.

But as Ken says, not nearly as interesting as your Latin reference.

Wow you guys, see this is what I mean. Good conversation uninterrupted with all that "mind the rules" gibberish. By the way, Tangent is also the name of a computer games company.
