First ever cruise, decided on West. Caribbean, including Mayan ruins, have 12,14 and 16 yr olds. Friend advised getting a balcony and an inside cabinet across the hall. Thinking about a 6 or 7 day cruise from Florida, pref. further north than Miami as a port. Searching on internet has become overwhelming, don't know what cruise line(s) to focus on, some suggest staying with Carnival as it is family-oriented. Just trying to keep it affordable for a first cruise, yet pleasant enough that I can get my husband and kids to try another cruise in the future!

Since you are a first-timer and have already discovered how much information is out there on the internet, I strongly recommend you seek out a cruise-oriented travel agent in your area. A TA who is familiar with cruises will be able to help you weed through all that information to find the cruise line, cabin types, etc. that are right for you and your family. Carnival is a decent choice, but so are some other lines. Please do find a TA to help you out.

Carnival can get a bit loud as it is a "Party Boat" and you may not appreciate this with pre adolescent children along. RCCL offers a nice cruise. As does NCL.

I agree with Karen's advice. Find you a specialized cruise travel agent to help you find the right cruise. Too much information on the internet, especially if you are not familiar with the cruise lines and the ports. A good agent will ask a lot of questions and qualify you to the right cruise.

Hmmm... I hate hearing that Carnival has "party boats!"

I am leaving from Galveston on 8/14/05 on the Elation for the Western Caribbean (Belize, Cozumel and Progreso) with my mother and four of my sons, ages 15, 13, 11 and 7. It is a 7 day cruise and the price is very good. I am in NY state and I found the airfare to Houston to be cheaper than the airfare to FL, if you can believe it.

Carnival does have quad cabins with rollaways for a fifth passenger. NCL does not, and I have heard that most cruise lines require an adult in each cabin. I had no choice but to book a quad as my mother only decided today that she is coming, too!

I will let you know how it goes!

Wow! Carla, you will definitely have to report back to us after your cruise. Would love to hear how it worked out with 5 in a cabin.

We've done RC and Carnival but only had the kids on Carnival. It was a spring break week and there was a bit of partying but not to the extent that I did not enjoy or it bothered my kids! I have to reply to the budget part of cruising and we just switched a cruise from another TO carnival b/c I could add another child and still have a HUGE balcony for the same price as the other company.
We have two times booked outside rooms with balconies and interior quads across the hall for the kids! LOVE IT!

Oh one note on the (adult in the room thing) We book it with one of us in the kids room one kids in the balcony room and then sleep the other way when we get there. It works out great b/c we have a key to the kids room that way and the kids have a key to our room that way.

To Roanker:

Did you book a cruise? My husband and I are going to the Western Caribbean in March '06 on RCCL Mariner of the Seas with my 17 and 9 year old. I have a good agent and am getting great advice from this site and others. From all the info I'm getting it should be great.
