Well I've been on a few cruises now. I know what the cruises are all about but I've NEVER been to Cozumel and this time my parents and two sisters and their family want to go. This really makes me nervous... since I'm getting the trip together and they have NEVER been outside the country or on a cruise. I'm good at "winging it" at whatever port I've been to but there's no way they would do that. I also have to factor in the "CHEAP" issue. I need some tips for things to do for my tight budget. We'll have 8 adults, 1 14 year old, 2 5 year olds and a 2 year old.... Any suggestions....

Cozumel is clean and safe-cabs are plentiful. Shopping is fairly good in Cozumel (the usual touristy stuff--jewelry, t-shirts, etc.) We go to the beach for a budget excursion. My parents are elderly (no beach, thank you) and they just negotiate a cab for a few hours and tour the island--stop when they want to maybe have some chips and guac and a little libation, or walk on a beach or see a cenote or whatever they pass by. If you want to look for a beach (they usually have an admission and then use the amenities like lounges, or no cover and you need to buy concession) just use the seach function for this site "cozumel beach" should net you a lot of reviews. It is our favorite stop on a cruise--no one seems to be panhandling or trying to coerce you into buying stuff (unless you are in a shop). It is the best island I can think of for "winging it". Have fun!

You could try visiting Chankanaab Park or Paradise Beach. They both have a cover charge (entrance fee for Chankanaab and wrist band for Paradise), but you can print coupons for discounts on the internet. Chankanaab has some decent snorkeling, a restaurant, some shops, some nice beaches, some water toys, some native animals, and the dolphin area. Paradise has a decent beach, restaurant/bar, water toys. The cab fare isn't too bad, you can usually negotiate. There are plenty of posts on Cozumel on this board. If you'll use your "Find" feature, upper left hand corner, and type in Cozumel, it will pull up all the posts. You might find something there that will interest you as well. Best wishes!

For a few extra bucks you can go to the mainland and travel to Tulum and see the Mayan ruins......and of course the shopping...I was just there 2 weeks aga and they've increased the shopping 4 or 5 blocks deep from the ocean front.....there was another Segway tour that my sister went on...she said that was a great excursion....a little pricey though.....Have a Great time...

Take a look at another thread in this forum on the Cozumel ferry before you decide.

I just wanted to make one correction about Paradise Beach.

Paradise Beach does not charge a cover charge.
Their lounge chairs, umbrellas, tables, clean restrooms, changing rooms etc are all free....

Paradise Beach does offer an OPTIONAL wristband IF you want to partake in the water/land toys...but this $10 for the wristband is not required.

Our 2 boys always get the wristband...hubby and I do not. (We are shade people)

We have been there as many as 5 times a year and love it if you are looking for a good beach day.

We were just at Paradise Beach last month. They just ask that you either buy the wristband or spend $10 on for or drink. Our 8 year old had a blast. We are going back again in Oct.

We actually ended up next door at Playa San Francisco. Our daughter saw the swimming and we sat down near it and did not realize that it was not Paradise Beach until after we ordered. We had purchased her the wristband so she just went back and forth between the two. Pardadise does not have a pool.

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear about Paradise. We purchased the wrist bands and used the lounge chairs and umbrella. We tried snorkeling there, but it wasn't that good. We still very much enjoyed it there, but like Chankanaab better.

I don't get the wrist band. I get a chair with some shade and order some nachos and a Dos Equis. I agree it isn't very good for snorkeling, Chankanaab is much better. For a beach day though it is great. They keep the place very clean and they have great service without hounding you.

I still have not gotten the pictures developed yet. ( It takes me forever to take a whole roll of film...and we are not digital yet)

But I do have a picture from my last trip in February where I climbed the coconut tree all the way to the top!!!

We are headed back next month...for the 5th time since OCTOBER!!!
