St. John-Excursion or on my own?

We want to visit Trunk Bay on St. John and do a little snorkeling. Would we be better off going on our own or doing the ship excursion? If we go with the ship we only have about an hour for the beach. We've heard the snorkeling here is great. Is that still true?

The Underwater Trail at Trunk Bay is still great and this is an excursion that is easily done on your own. Just grab the Red Hook Ferry over to St. John's. Once you are there a continuosly running tram service will deliver you to Trunk Bay, where you can rent snorkel equipment on site.
