The town was just starting to show signs of continued prosperity. The outer fringes are still mired in poverty but Costa Maya has really come on strong in the past 7 years. It's a shame but,unfortunately, that is always the risk of having an economy that is solely based on tourism revenues. I pray that they will be able to recover quickly and I hope that the world community will be generous in lending support to a once-beautiful community.

It looks horrible, but for a category 5, it's amazing that there's anything left at all. It's going to take a lot of work and a ton of money. I do hope they will be able to make a come back.

It's amazing how much damage WEATHER can cause. Those piers are strong enough to hold an entire cruise ship in place, but somehow the waves and/or wind destroyed entire sections of it! Blows my mind. I guess that living in NY has kept me from experiencing any real hurricanes.

They can still use the pier in those photos. Only the cruise passengers just have to take a running leap to get to each segment. Then they have to be tendered or swim to the last segment before going ashore (JUST KIDDING!!)

Just as someone said, it looks as if it could have been much worse. I hope that the people of Costa Maya rebuild and get back on their feet as soon as possible. And the same goes for cruise ships returning.
