Panama Excursion

Will be on a southern cruise on the Volendam in January which sails into Gatun Lake in the Panama Canal. Is it best to stay on the ship for this part of the cruise or does someone recommend an excursion?

catiemor - it has been a few years since I was on a Panama Canal cruise but we went through the locks into Gatun Lake but didn't dock in Panama.

Get in touch with the Smithsonian Institute to go to Barro de Colorado, an island where they study nature. Reservations required. Boat would leave from Miraflores I think but the train could get you there. I love Panama.
