anybody have any info on port of progresso?

I was trying to decide rather or not to take an excursion. I would rather not if there is a beach close to the port that we can get to safely and cheap. any sugestions?

There is a great beach right at the foot of the pier (a taxi ride from where the ship docks). There are palapa restaurants, lounge chairs and lots of sand to relax on. Check out

I think the taxi ride to Merida is also about 2 bucks from Progreso. When are you going, and what ship?

$2 sounds too low for the 20 or so mile journey to Merida even by Mexican standards. We visited Merida from Progresso in 2002 on a ship's tour and it was most enjoyable and definitely not as touristy as Cozumel.

Actually, there is a fleet of passenger vans that makes the trek from Progreso to Merida and the rate of $2 is aout correct. This is of course for a seat in a van full of people (locals). a private taxi would be much more expensive.

The vans leave every 10 minutes or so from the main square in Progreso (about 3-4 blocks inland from the public market.)

If you haven't been to any really good Mayan ruins yet, the excursion to Kabah and Uxmal was the best we've seen. Its a ?2 hour bus ride though.
