St. Thomas Magens Bay or St. John?

Can anyone give me their advise on whether to go to St. John's Trunk bay for snorkeling and water sports or to Magens bay in St. Thomas? And what time should you get off the ship to do your excursion?

We've done both and they're both great beaches. I personally prefer Trunk Bay, we usually take the ferry over (it was $6.00 pp). Then get a taxi to the beach, I can't remember how much the entrance fee was or the taxi fare, but they do have showers, lockers and a place to get snacks. As far as I'm concerned, the earlier the better, I can sleep when I get back home.

I agree of the 2 spots - Trunk Bay would be my choice. If you decide you don't want to take the ferry over to St. John, however, I would consider Sapphire Beach over Magen's Bay.

Would you suggest booking the excursion through someone other than the cruise line? And how muchtime do you generally give yourself to get back to the ship when not booking with the cruise line?
