Does anyone recommend a great excursion for either one? We are a family or 4 with a teenage boy and a pre-teen girl, neither whom are daredevils but may want something either semi-active or a really cool tour. Thanks!
Hello. Welcome to cruise-chat. I would suggest the Lamanai & New River Mayan River tours. We have done it twice with RCCL. You used to be able to climb to the top of the pyramid, and see over the top of the Belize jungle. I don't know if you can do that anymore. You can read my review about it. You need to log in, click the "Find" tab on the top of the post, type in "Lamanai river" in the word search. Several post will pop up about it. Some are more extensive then others. Both times we have done this, we saw several howler monkeys. For cozumel, we have done a segway and snorkel excursion. That was fun, to try to segways, snorkeling was fun too. Hope this helps, Lil' Lori
Hi Lori, I looked them up.... thanks for the suggestions.... the swimming with dolphins looks good to... Not sure if I can get hubby to commit to the extra $600.00....
We just did both ports with our 11 year old. He loved swimming with the dolphins in Cozumel. We took a taxi on our own to Chanakaab National Park and saved quite a bit of $$$. We paid $14 for adults and I think $7 for the kids to get into the park. It was $79-$99 for the dolphin swim/encounter. In Belize we did the Altun Ha/River Wallace tour. I had read beforehand that it is not the safest to do your own tours in Belize, so we booked that one through the ship. We saw manatees, dolphins, alligators, iguanas, monkeys and crabs on the river. My 11 year old was not real thrilled with Altun Ha, except for climbing it. He also is not a real thrill seeker. Hopefully this is helpful. Have fun.
We usually just rent a jeep in Cozumel and explore the island on our own. This is the only port that I would personally recommend renting a vehicle. Easy to get around. The jeep is usually around $85.00 upwards for the day.
In Belize, Cave Tubing is a great excursion. The cruiselines usually charge around $90.00 or so, but if you search out the different independent excursions online you can find it for anywhere form $40.00 upwards per person.
We took a group of 22 in Belize in November and set up a private tour for the Cave tubing with www.ExploreBelizeCaves.com and they were wonderful. There are other recommendations on here also. Reggies tours is another highly recommended tour guide.
Just got back from both Cozumel and Belize.
In Cozumel, we did the Cave Snorkling/Jeep beach picnic. It was great.. Had alot of fun.
In Belize, we did the Wallace River/Mayan Ruin tour. This was great.. Climbed up the Ruins, great pics. and the river tour was 2 hours of information.. We relly liked it..
We did notice the Cave tubing was very popular and everyone seemed to have a great time..

Thanks for the Jeep Idea...We're on the Liberty and were scheduled for Costa-maya and now changed to Cozumel. After the itiniery change, I noticed we had no options for booking excursions in Cozumel and just in the last week, I noticed only 3 options are available, 2 dolphin type encounters and the Playa mia beach day. So...I'm thinking renting a Jeep and driving off to the beaches...any ideas, should I avoid any areas?
Cozumel is about the only place that we consider renting. Its really very easy to get around the island, since there is only one road around. Once you rent the jeep the company will give you a map and you start out from the port on the main road, you will circle all the way around and end up back where you started from. Do be careful in town, as there are quite a few motor scooters on the road, and they seem to have the right a way. But depending on how muc time you have in Cozumel, you should be able to stop at the different beachs, get some great photos on the back side of the island have plenty of time to eat, and then end up back in town to shop and still have time to get your vehicle back to the port.
Have fun, we have done this at least 4 times and love it..we are on our own time schedule and not a tours schedule.
