Yes Magen's Bay and Trunk Bay, St. John are awesome. I go to Trunk Bay as like penny I like to snorkel.

Choochella, the admission has never included snorkel equipment on my visits. I bring my own but rented a vest once there. Maybe some of the tours include it.

As always, I agree with Penny. Trunk Bay is out of this world! Alteratively, another favorite excursion of ours is offered through Atlantis Submarines, not a submarine excursion though, but a catarmaran sail/snorkel to Honeymoon Beach. Some of the ships offer it as "Champagne Catarmaran Sail & Snorkel to St. John". You can book independantly though, here's a link to thier web page...

thanks - we now booked trunk bay, but will keep this in mind for next time.
Question: is it true if you book with independant operators, the ship will not wait for you if you are late? That thought alone would be enough for me to book excursions with the cruiseline

Yes, it is very true. I've seen people running up to the ship as they're sailing away. If you're on an excursion not booked through a ship, make sure you have plenty of time to get back to the ship. Take into consideration, traffic, flat tires, cows crossing the road, etc.

We booked with Carnival so we are safe. No reason for unnecessary drama just to save a couple of $$

Island Cruz, when we went to Trunk Bay in October, we just went over to the boxes that held the snorkeling gear and just took what we needed. No one was there to collect any money. Maybe they were on break, ay?
