Puerto Rico Rain Forest rental car

I've read that El Yunque Rain Forest is best seen by renting a car as opposed to taking the tour - I am a single mom with two kids 8 and 12, is this ok for me or should I just stick to the tour? I don't want to miss the good stuff and I'm fairly adventurous, just don't want to be unsafe. This is our first cruise.

I guess you would have to ask yourself how safe do you feel driving with two small children in unfamiliar territory? If you would have a flat tire, can you change your own tire? I guess I would think about things like that.

I must agree with Cruise Fanatic. While it is great to explore the rain forest on your own, given that you will be traveling alone with your 2 children, there are just too many variables that could spell disaster for you going it alone. If you were staying in Puerto Rico for a couple of days pre/post cruise, then it would a good option, but if you are doing it within the few hours that you are in port, stick with the ship's tour.
