Belize

We will be going to Belize next week on Carnival Valor.... I have been reading that it is very unsafe...

Is this true?? What is going on there??
Any precautions, etc?

The US State Dept. has no travel warnings or "public announcements" (a lesser warning) about Belize. It's a third world country, so there is poverty and some of the standards may not be quite the same as in North America (toilets, etc.) However, I don't think it's any less "safe" than most Caribbean ports of call. Precautions - just ordinary street smarts. If you want to feel a bit safer, book a shore excursion through the cruise line, or with a reputable excursion company.

I am also going to Belize next week on the Valor. I am also concerned about going into Belize. I figure we'll see how it goes, play it by ear. I found this article interesting:

Please let us know how things go for you on your visit to Belize. I was there about 3 weeks ago and other than being saddened by the abject poverty that many of the residents endure, I did not feel unsafe or threatened. It would probably be wise,in light of the present situation, to take a ship's excursion as Karen suggests.

Interesting article. I wasn't aware of the problems until now. Belize has an enclosed shopping compound right at the cruise terminal. I suspect that a visit might be made to the compound with absolutely no danger whatsoever, but you might be leary about wandering throughout downtown Belize until the problem settles down.

I was in Belize a few weeks ago when sailing on the Grand Princess. All of the shore excursions were cancelled due to our late arrival.We were suppose to be in Belize at 1:00,but didn't get there until 2:30. We were really looking forward to our cave tubing excursion.I guess this gives us an excuse to go back.If you have an excursion booked and get beyond the gates of the pier you'll be safe.Have a good trip.
