Which is better - Playe Del Carmen or Chanknaab Park - All we are looking for is a great beach day. What about the prices.

Depending on when you're leaving, Chanakaab may not be re-opened. They were due to open in April (?). The last time we were there (pre-hurricane) we did a swim with the dolphins in Chanakaab, it was nice and clean, there were a couple of places to eat and get some beer or margaritas, a few shops, restrooms, and lockers. We haven't been to Playa del Carmen in years, so I don't know how much it has changed. It used to be a beautiful beach, but don't know what is like now. Have fun!!

According to information I have read elsewhere the park (Chankanaab) is not yet open. This was reported by someone who went there last weekend (3/27). Progress is being made in the rebuilding process but It appears they are still not close to opening. We were hoping to go there next week ourselves but have decided to plan on other activities.

I asked some locals and they say Chan. Park will reopen 6/1. It is a great place to go.

You may want to take an excursion to Xel-ha. Great snorkling, Swim with the dolphins, good beach sand (you will enter the water using stairs). There's some trails and minor ruins to explore. They have storage lockers & showers. We stopped there on our last trip to Cozumel (3/18/06) and had a great time there. Our original plans were for Chanakaab Park, but I booked this when it became obvious the park wouldn't be open.
Whatever you do, enjoy yourselfs!

How can I go about finding Xel-ha - Is there a web site? It sounds like something my daughter would really enjoy. Thanks for the tip.

Latest news is that Chankanaab will re-open mid-May, you can see a story on www.wilmacozumel.com

The snorkeling in Xel-ha is extraordinary. There is a website www.xel-ha.com that may help you find out more. The ruins in Telhum are also interesting, but give me the water any time. We did an excursion there that included both through the ship. The ship provided lunch at Xel-ha. It was an all day event and well worth the money. Chankanaab was really nice, we were there pre-hurricane, but now they are saying 6/1 for re-opening. Hope this helps.
