We are scheduled to port in Progreso, and I hear that not as much to do there. I saw the small ruins as a short trip and wondered who has been there? Did you book thru cruise ship or go on your own? Please share your experience. Thanks!
Has no one ever done this? I know Progreso isn't as exciting port as some would choose, but for me, the taste of real Old Mexico is kinda neat? Anyone going or been?
We did this one a couple years ago in April.
It was ok if you like the ruins stuff. I remember it was blazing hot and it's a long, long walk with no shade from one end to the other. There are several ruins that you can climb or walk on, and the cenote was pretty cool. It was full of fish and my kids liked that.
Oh, we booked through Carnival and they provided a bus for transport. We made no other stops along the way. The bus left from the dock and brought us back to the ship.
We found everything in Progresso and Merida to be quite boring. You can't swim there...the water is dirty. And really nothing much else to do.
A little piece of advice..ALWAYS book your cruise through the cruise line. Yes, you might pay a few dollars more, but if something goes wrong, the cruise line will remedy it, and if there's a problem getting back to the ship, they WILL WAIT if it's one of their excursions. If you book on your own and you get back late...they will wave to you as they leave!!
