We have horseback riden several destinations in the Caribbean. There is a stable in St. Maarten that is fun and can be booked through Shoretrips.com (NOT LUCKY STABLES--beware). We rode horse through HOOVES in Ocho Rios Jamaica. We booked through Shoretrips.com but they have their own web site. We were met in a clean van by a personable driver. The horses were well cared for. they are supposedly rescued animals from Jamaica's horsetracks and each one has a story (doesn't everyone have a story in Jamaica?) We were given adequate instructions. The ride went through a plantation (the guide named the vegetation and pointed out ruins for the 18th century buildings). We got to the beach and had a few minutes to rest while the horses got "water tack" (there are venders there but they do not come to you, if you are not interested don't go by them--a rare occurance in Jamaica) then we rode in the water--amazing! After they let the horses stand a short time (we swam and hung around on the beach) then you remount and ride along the gorgeous shoreline back to where you started.
I do not care for horses. I do not care for heights. I am not overly fond of being really hot. Having said that this ranks as one of the top three adventures we have had in the Caribbean and we would ALL do it again in a heartbeat. We are very cautious in Jamaica but Shoretrips.com is bonded and insured and US based, even if these native venders aren't! We are so glad we took a chance on this.
