Where to stay in San Juan?

We are heading to San Juan a day early and am wanting advice on where to stay in San Juan. I don't know if I want someplace close to the port, in Old San Juan, etc. Any advice?

Most convenient to the port is the Wyndham Old San Juan - only a couple blocks away, very walkable.

I looked that one up on the internet yesterday and read that they don't allow bookings for less than 2 nights. We will only be there one night. Any other suggestions?

I booked one night only for September 6. 2003. You can get a room for two for $129 + taxes. Go to Wyndham.com. Don't book the pre-cruise room with Carnival, Royal Caribbean, etc., you pay about double and you have to book 2 or 3 nights. Also, make sure you are not charged for the outbound transfer (bus from airport to pier). My travel agent checked with Royal Caribbean (Carnival may be the same) and they told us it would not be valid if arriving a day early. Just get a taxi. If you purchased your air with the cruise, your return transfer will be good.
