San Juan PR

Hey All:

My wife, and 15 and 11 year old sons are going on Explorer of the Seas 4/1/07 out of Miami. About San Juan, PR: I know the criminal element has increased (The Netas), as has the faction wanting total independence from the US. Is it safe to go from the ship to El Morro and Cristobol, or is it adviseable to just book the tour from the ship? Thanks.

I was in San Juan in December. We had our 3 Grandchildren with us. Ages 6, 9, and 12. Not a problem going to El Morro and doing shopping. During the day it's safe.

Just for clarity, did you make the walk from the ship or did you sign up for the excursion through the ship?

If you don't dock at the Pan American Pier which is on the other side of Old San Juan, it's about a 20 minute walk from the ship. Otherwise you'll have to take a cab. We didn't sign up for any excursion. I've been there a dozen times and always went on my own.
