I was just looking at Gene Sloan's USA Today blog and found this story. How stupid can people be? Sadly this will end up as Carnival's fault on the anti-cruise websites.

<edit to remove "stupid" from the thread title>

Oh my goodness, did those people even consider they were not in American? I dont see how this is carnivals fault but my goodness these people should have realized they we in a foreign land. I wonder how much alcohol was consummed that day. they should have paid the money and looked at it as a lesson well learned.

I suspect they do now!

And this should be a lesson to everyone who arranges a tour with a cab - - - always verify before you get in the cab what the TOTAL fare will be . . . Make sure everyone knows what is expected. Oh yeah - and remember that you're not in America, and American laws don't apply...

I see several probs. First they didn't get a fare quote. Then when they went to the police station, they didn't act accordingly. Now they are getting an extended stay on Antiqua. This is why people stick with the ship's excursions. And everything I've read says to get a fare quote BEFORE the ride.

Presumably they were okay with a $50 fare that ended at the beach so they should have paid that and gotten another taxi back to the ship.

It seems the main probs happened at the police station. It does sound like the passengers are at fault in the melee with police. Hopefully they'll get a fair trial, but regardless, they are not able to leave the island anytime soon.

thousands and thousand of cruise passengers every year travel to foreign lands and dont do ship excursions. I dont like to see that as a reason the people acted the way they did. I dont usually take the ships excursion and have never had a problem.
the problem as I see it was lack of communication. common sense tells you to check the price before jumping in the taxi. these people left their common sense on the ship.

All they had to do was pay him the original price and get out of the cab, and then find another ride back. I read one report where they actually demanded to be driven to a police station, and the driver obliged them. I guess they figured the police and taxi drivers on Antigua don't know each other, if not being related somehow.

Some people haven't got walking-around sense and think they are the ones setting the rules.

The problem is these people are stupid, classless, and trouble no matter what country they are in. Personally, Antigua can keep them. We don't need them in the U.S.

Well i wont go so far as to say keep them. They are United States citizens, send them home. They are kinda like the stupid cousins at a family reunion, but they still belong. Send them home.

Welcome to the caribbean BABY!!!
You know the only place where the USA laws apply in the route of carnival victory is in my Island, Puerto Rico and st.Thomas.
My advice use the cruise company tours everytime
sometimes cheaper means jail...
