Costa Maya Beach Break

Hi, We've looked at the cruise excuesion and independent beach breaks in Mahahual but they're expensive for 2 adults and 2 teens. Is there any way we can go to the beach on our own,safely? Are there taxis that will take and pick up? Are there places on the beach that have chairs, a bar,etc? If we can take a taxi, what are the rates? Thanks for any info.

Absolutely ! I am a single lady traveller, and felt very safe doing this on my own with info from this site. Follow signs for taxis, I highly reccomend the shuttle down the dock, it is way longer than it looks, especially on the way back !! LOL The rates are set, they have vans, I just looked for a smaller van almost full, I think it was $5 pp, and offered the driver an extra $5 to leave right away...sitting in a hot van waiting for it to leave isn't fun. I walked from the taxi stand onto the beach and looked for the most comfortable chairs, it was $10 for the day and the first beer was included....I ate at my chair, it really is a small town and beach easy to navigate. When it was time for a bathroom break, I was escorted in a very polite manner to a very near CLEAN restroom. If you have been in Mexico before and know to politely say no and ignore, you will have no problem. I had a great day, very happy with my decision to get out of Costa Maya, would stop there again if it was on my itinerary. Loved the local small town.

Hi Queenofcruising,

Did you visit Costa Maya before or after the hurricain? We were there before and had a great day also and am very curious to know the state of the village now after the storm.

Hurricane Dean leveled the place in August 2007.

There is still some rebuilding going on, but both are open again to tourists.

Does anyone know if the restaurant/bar "Cats Meow" reopened after the hurricane? That is where we spent our day in Costa Maya, had the best coconut shrimp I have ever eaten. CJ - if you get off the ship and go directly to the cabs, you will be among the first to arrive in Mahajual and you will get 1st pick at beach spots, it gets crowded as the day goes on. If you want to shop at the pier, do it before reboarding. The people there have nothing, I took a bag of trinkets for the kids and Barbara, owner of "Cats Meow" distributed them for me. One child came to thank me. She was wearing my little barretts in her hair, it was very touching. I think we only paid $4 or maybe $5 with a tip for the cab but again that was before Dean hit. We felt very safe and no problems getting a cab back to the ship. You will have a great day !! Enjoy your trip !
