We did a beach day there. It is a "created" port specifically for cruise passengers. It is not our favorite. You will find mixed reviews depending on what you enjoy doing. Friends of ours did a "dune buggy on the beach" shore tour and had a blast--it is very undeveloped so it was really scenic and unpopulated. They got hammered by a hurricane and are only now allowing ships to port. I imagine they are desperate for revenue.

Dune Buggies and ATV's are fun in Costa Maya. At the beach, there was a neat pool with a swim-up bar-complete with stools in the water! They had pool games through the afternoon that were very entertaining. The swim-up bar is also shaded, so its a great way to beat the heat. If you're not renting a dune buggy, find a stool in the pool to enjoy Costa Maya...otherwise, stay on the ship.

Hmmm... sounds like a scene from Caddyshack. Seriously, give Costa Maya a chance and formulate your own opinion. I enjoy the excursions on Costa Maya because they offer a glimpse at Yucatan life before it has become too commercial. Sure the port was built exclusively for cruise ships but, beyond that, the area outside of the port itself is brimming with Mayan beauty and history.
(this is a pic of pre-hurricane Costa Maya as taken from the bow of the Fantasy)
We loved Costa Maya. We took an excursion to the Chachoben (sp.) ruins and it was very interesting. My husband became intrigued by the Mayan Culture after visiting there. It is worth the visit because it isn't a long excursion and you have time to do other things, too. Like shop!
We look forward to visiting Costa Maya again in January when we go on the Panama Canal cruise.
we have been 3 times and always enjoyed it. We've always taken the bus from the peir to the beach and spend the day at the beach. All three times we have had the same waiter (Jorge) at the beach. They will serve you food and drinks at a table sitting in the water, real low cost and very good food. For fam of five we eat and drink all day for $75.00. Chairs and tables are free. Massages 1 hour $25.00, the best one I ever had, of course I did have a few margaritas before the massage thinking back...
Im going on a cruise in Jan of 2009 on Carnival Glory and one of our stops is Costa Maya. I've heard about a salt water pool at the port, is this true and can you swim in it?
