We will be cruising in Sept. with one day at Cozumel and one day at Calica. We plan on going to the Tulum ruins while in Calica. We would like to do some shopping and visit a beach in Cozumel. If we book a beach visit through the ship, I'm afraid we would be pushed for time to do any shopping. We were thinking of doing the taxi thing or renting a jeep. My questions are:

If we get a taxi to the beach, will their be taxi's around to get us back to the ship?

What is the approximate distance to Paradise beach from the docks?

What is the driving distance around the main island road if driving yourself.

Is the best shopping within walking distance of the boat dock?

If we shop in the morning and go to the beach after lunch, will we be able to get a beach chair or do you have to get there early for one?

About what is the cost of an all inclusive at Paradise Beach or Playa Mia?

What's a good site to check out for jeep rental?

Thanks for any help!

We have been to Cozumel three times.

You will have no problem getting a taxis. There are taxis waiting at dock and at the beach. The cost is very good.

Paradise beach is about 15 to 20 minutes away - never no traffic.

We have been told NEVER to drive in Cozumel - The cops are not the best - (a little dirty)

There is small shopping around the port area - which is enough for me. (Mostly Junk) - But you can take a taxis downtown - Maybe 10 minutes.

You can find a chair on the beach - Most of the front ones will be taken.

I forgot what the cost is for Paradise Beach.

Most of the rentals in Cozumel are junk - A family from the ship rent a jeep and wasn't sure it was going to make it back.

My advice: Don't rent a jeep - Pay the taxis fees and enjoy the trip. My daughter (16) and I cruise often and always use taxis. They have always worked will for us.

Pardise Beach is good - We stayed in the water almost all day. (It was August - HOT)

Can only comment on Playa Mia. It was really terrific, also probably 15 or 20 minutes. Nice beach, lots of chairs, clean bathrooms, concession, small shopping area. Spent the day in the water on a day all water excursions were canceled (love those big waves).

We shop near the pier and never have been down town--I am told the selection is similar but have never tried anything else (found more than enough to spend money on without venturing further). I am told prices are higher since hurricane Wilma, and would probably agree with that assessment. If you had seen the damage the year it happened you would understand the price hikes--yikes!!

We have used the cabs in Cozumel, had no trouble getting back from the beach or Chakanaab. If you dock downtown they are lined up in plain sight, if you are the the international pier/market you go through the shopping area to the street and they are lined up there.

We are not a try everything kind of family. Having said that: This is a foreign country, you are a tourist (perceived as wealthy just by virtue of where you come from), and you like every other American are nicely insured. Do you really want to rent a car?

Not to take away from what others have said but we have been to Cozumel on 5 different occassions and have rented vehicles on 3 of these occasions. The last time we rented a jeep, was in 2004 and we rented a brand new 2005 jeep with no milage on it. Its easy to drive around the island as its only about 45 miles and only one road that takes you around. In our opinion we love renting, dont just rent the first thing you see, check the prices out and the vehicle before you commit. First time we rented it was an old jeep, which we had no problems with, but after that we rented a van that held 7 people which was brand new and then again the jeep. We always ask to see the vehicle before we sign papers. Total cost for renting is around $85.00 upwards depending on what you rent.

Yes, there are taxis everywhere and they gather at the places where the tourists go.

What is the approximate distance to Paradise beach from the docks? Taxi required.

What is the driving distance around the main island road if driving yourself. Have made the drive twice, and it is beautiful. Stopped at several beaches along the way. Saw the San Gervasio ruins, and stopped at Punta Sur. Great day on Cozumel in our rental car.

Is the best shopping within walking distance of the boat dock? Depends on which dock, but generally close by.

If we shop in the morning and go to the beach after lunch, will we be able to get a beach chair or do you have to get there early for one? Depends on the beach and the day. Usually there are chairs in the afternoon, but much easier early.

About what is the cost of an all inclusive at Paradise Beach or Playa Mia? I don't remember.

What's a good site to check out for jeep rental? - I've used Executive with great results. You can Google Executive Car Rental

Just got back from a Western Carib. cruise with Royal Caribbean that was the BEST trip ever. Funny you mentioned Cozumel, b/c we did it wrong~ so let me help you! Off the ship, we rented a jeep from Budget (which is directly beside executive in the shopping mall off the pier and they match prices) for sixty dollars for the day. We went to Playa Mia first and it was windy, so the water was not clear....the worker there told us to try Paradise- but it was the same (the costs for these were around 15.00-20.00 for the day) and ended up at "mr.sanchos" beach which is free but not the place to go...the water there was brown from the wind and the sand also (you could see the blue, you just couldn't get to it). Anyway, after suffering here for a few drinks and ratty beach chairs, we got back in our jeep to go to a highly recommended restaurant "Coconuts" around the other side of the island. So driving SOUTH and around the bottom to come back up the other side of the island, we began to see THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BEACHES I have EVER seen that were totally uninhabited ...all you have to do is pull over and take a towel...many are rocky, but keep looking, there are many with white sand and the road drives right along the waterline...you will see some beautiful crashing waves and we were SO envious of the smarter folks who had found these gems and stopped to stay awhile. Keep going on the main road (you'll pass little food places) until you see the sign for "Coconuts"...this restaurant is on the top of a cliff...absolutely BEAUTIFUL outdoor seating with GREAT margueritas and mexican food....it can be crowded but it's a fun fun place...really, a don't miss. Take a look at the picture albums at the bar ) Have a great time, but steer clear of the tourist beaches, and find your own- we can't wait to do it right the next time. Have a great trip!!

Taxi!
Back in 1990 my husband and I were in Cancun, rented a jeep with another couple that we met on our trip, we went to Tulum and Xel-Ha which by the way was beautiful then, driving back to Cancun in the hotel zone, going with the flow of traffic not speeding, we were pulled over by the policica with machine guns strapped to them, we had to give them 50 cash who's gonna argue!
A few years later a family friend rented a scooter in Cozumel, was struck by a crazy taxi driver, had to be flown to Miami and then died.
I will be in Cozumel soon, booked the Royal Dolphin swim in Chankanaab Park for my daughter and her girlfriend we will be taking a taxi.

When we rented the jeep it was brand new,we had alot of fun we were on our own, the day before that we were on a very bummpy bus ride in at to Cozumel so having your on ride was nice, but I don't think I want to be at the mercy of those cops especially when kids are involved.

I am so excited for this up comming trip even though it didn't sound like it in my reply.
Just be safe and have fun.

I had heard stories about the police in Cancun and on the main land, but keep in mind Cozumel is a tourist area, the police will not hassle you if you obey the traffic laws. Now as far as scooters, yes those are dangerous and I would never recommend anyone rent one. This is a way of transportation for many of the locals and you will find that the automobiles do not respect the scooter drivers.

Tips for Cozumel - been there several times. I highly recommend Paradise Beach. Our ship docked at Punta Lagosta pier and we walked to the very end of the pier to catch a cab. There were 10 of us and we got a good deal. The usual price is about $12.00 U.S. for 4 one way to Paradise Beach. You will have no problem getting back. It costs $9.00 at Paradise Beach but only if you want an armband to use the beach toys (floats, ice berg, trampoline, kayak's, snorkel equipment). Chairs and umbrellas are free. I can only vouch for the Margaritas and Guac/Nachos were excellent. We went to the beach first in the A.M. Got there before it "opened" but you just walk on in and find a chair. After we were done, we showered and changed and took a cab back and walked around the shops and stopped in Senor Frogs for some fun. You will not regret Paradise Beach. Skip the cruise line excursion.
