Hi, everyone! I was wondering what one should do about shore excursions in the Bahamas?!?! Should one take a couple since it is our firt cruise to learn how things work, or should we skip them and do our own thing? Tell me what are some good things to do without doing the shore excursions and how does one get around the island after getting off the boat if you do not take an excursion. Also, I would like to know of any suggestions as to where to eat.
THANKS!

You will be able to walk to shopping. You can
also take the bus to Cable Beach. A visit to Atlantis on Paridise Island is kinda cool walking through their aqariums with sharks swimming around you! You can cab it there or take a water taxi from the cruise ship piers.
In Nassau, take a cab over to the Atlantis. There is a public beach next door. There is the Straw Market and the Queen's staircase. In Freeport, there have been so many negative reviews, I'd stick to a ship excursion. Freeport used to be one of my favorite islands, but haven't been there in years. Others have said it's gone downhill. If you're going to Grand Turk, we did a great snorkel through the ship. The snorkeling there is wonderful. Can't help you on eating, we always go back to the ship. The food is so awesome, why eat elsewhere. Best wishes and have a wonderful cruise!
I was in the Bahamas a few years back. I wouldn't venture further than the straw market on your own. As soon as we got off of the ship, many children approached us asking for money. We made the mistake of giving them some spare change. They followed us through the entire straw market begging for more. I felt bad for the children, but it does put a bad taste in your mouth. You will probably be propositioned for narcotics of some sort. Personally, I don't care for the Bahamas.
Atlantis is a safe bet and it's a beautiful beach to enjoy the day at. And, as Penny indicated, good snorkeling. As always, just my opinion. Safe voyage. A'ndrea
I like the Bahamas. Have never had a problem there. The first time I went, my girlfriend and I asked our cabbie to "take us where you eat". He took up all through the residential sections and into the "hood" I guess. He dropped us off at this tiny little neighborhood restaurant. Not fancy at all.
We had shrimp, some sort of fish, Mac&cheese, rice & beans and some sort of veggie, with a can of their local soda. All of this came to something like $12 for both of us. The food was very very good.
The cabbie came back and got us so I have no idea where this restaurant was/is located. This was in 1999 so the price may be up to $15 for two by now.
The ship's excursion to the aquarium at Atlantis requires that you walk a good bit. If you take a cab, you save $$$ and get dropped of right in front of the hotel. Their casino is also very nice. The beach in front of the hotel is private but just walk down a bit and you can enjoy that part of the beach.

This I am not sure. When I did it, it was thru the ship but I don't recommend anyone go this route. I have read on these boards that you can self-tour the aquarium by just walking through it. There was very little that you really needed a guide. However, if you go to the Atlantis' website, I am sure you can find out about purchasing tickets. To get there, just hop in a cab. There are always cabs waiting to take people back to the ship.
Just, when you go off on your own, be mindful of the time so that you don't miss the ship's departure.

Amanda, visit www.atlantis.com and then click on Marine Habitat. You should find your answers here. There is also a "contact us" section where you can e-mail them directly with your question(s). Hope this helps. A'ndrea
Amanda, I probably should have told you to first click on "site menu" on the top left and then scroll down the left column until you see Marine Habitat. Good luck.
