Hi ! I am looking for information on the Island of Princess Cays. I have heard the water is really too cold to enjoy and too cold to snorkle. Is this true ? I will be there in the middle of March...is that a bad time?
Princess Cays is a private area on the island of Eleuthera - the northern tip I think.
It is a very nice place. I was there once in early March - back in 1998 - and the water was okay "once you got used to it". Bear in mind the average temperature in that area in March is 80 or so, and the water will be a little less than that.
I can't imagine ever needing a wet suit in the Caribbean; but then, not everybody's tolerance is the same. Just the amount of room it would take in your luggage alone would be reason enough to say, "no, don't bother".
No need to buy a wet suit for snorkeling in March unless they're having an unusual season or like Rick says you're very cold natured. If either is the case you'd save some money renting it instead of buying one. They're not a small investment for a one time thing.
We were there last year in March and found the water to be cooler than the other ports, but certainly not cold enough to warrant a wetsuit (then again, we are from California so cold ocean water is the norm.) The bigger issue is that the Cay is not very protected and the day we were there it was very windy and the visabilty was terrible. I would not look to the Princess Cay as your "snorkeling day" unless you are an absolute beginner and just want to "try it out"; there are just too many other better ports to snorkel at.
I don't want to sound negative about the stop, the kids loved it and that day is just what we needed after days on the go; just don't get your hopes up about the snorkeling.
We will be back at the Cay on 3/21; how about you?
Oh I think I get it.....I just want to make it a enjoyable as possible- I am taking my 17 year old son (kinda a graduation present) and want him to really enjoy ! I am considering reserving the snorkeling with the St Maarten island "new waves snorkel @shipwreck cove"..do ya'll think he would enjoy that ?
We were just at Princess Cays in Mid Jan & the water was a little cool but not to bad once you get in it. In March it'll be warmer for sure & it's doubtful if you'd need a wet suit but it would be a first to see someone wearing one there.
