Mayan Ruins of Tulum (Ultramar)

We will be going on the Carnival Legend the 28th of June for a Western Caribbean cruise. There will be 24 of us celebrating my Mom and Dad's 50th wedding anniversery.

Some of the family is interested in the Mayan Ruins of Tulum (ultramar) in Cozumel. Is this worth going to? Any information would be great.

Yes and no. Tulum is wonderful, mostly intact, and the only Mayan ruin on a beach (which you can use and which is gorgeous. However, it is NOT on Cozumel. From Cozumel you will ferry to the mainland (50 minutes one way) on a ferry that lacks the wonderful stabilizers your ship has (those mops and buckets you pass getting on board are not for looks--the pierside shops by the ferry dock on the mainland sold Dramamine for $8 for the tiny travel pack). Then you walk several blocks to an area that can accommodate a bus and ride 45 more minutes (one way). You can spend an hour or two at the ruins, and then reverse the procedure. Worth seeing? yes. But I advise people to try this when already on the mainland soas to not waste more than half your day on transportation.

Hi, Lizzyjane. We did this tour last year in October. It was a group of us, ages 12-56. Everyone enjoyed themselves. The history was interesting and the beach and view were gorgeous. I would STRONGLY suggest you bring and wear mosquito repellent though. We did not and paid the price. Other than that, I think it was well worth it.

I would probably not go there again but I think people should see it at least once. Anyway, that is my $0.02

It is a bit of a lengthy trek, but I thought well worth it. We did the Telhum/Xel-ha tour, so we were able to snorkel after walking around the ruins. Since snorkeling is my true love, I wished we had spent more time in Xel-ha, the water was gorgeous! However, the ruins are amazing and the setting is breath-taking. If you don't mind spending the time to get there, I'd recommend it.

It is a bit of a schlep to get there, but well worth it...
We've done it twice....very interesting area, and the water is SO blue....
