My boyfriend and I are cruising to Cozumel in two weeks. Someone recommended to us that we rent scooters and tour the island. He is deadset on doing this, and I admit that it sounds like a lot of fun. However, I have heard that they are dangerous and I'm wondering if anyone has ever rented one here, or has any advice. I'm sure it would be "safer and wiser" NOT to rent one, but is it really that bad if you look out for other drivers and don't go too fast? It seems like the best and cheapest way to get around.

I don't recommend it. The roads on Cozumel are not the best and there is a ton of traffic at times - taxis, trucks, and the worst part....all the tourists who have rented cars and jeeps along with all the people on scooters. Lots of opportunity for accidents to happen since you have all these tourists who are not familiar with the traffic patterns or roads.

I rode a motorcycle everywhere for almost 30 years until I gave it up a couple years back, and with all that two wheel experience I would not rent a scooter on Cozumel or any other island.

But that is just my opinion.

You can rent a car alot cheaper than scooters. They have alot of problems and break down alot. If its hot, you will enjoy a car alot more and if is rains, you gonna ride in the rain and mud
? Rent a car at the dock, stop at the store buy a cooler with beer and soda and drive around the island.

DO NOT rent a scooter. Who ever suggested you do so is suspect as a friend in my book. I am with Dave on this one.. Been riding Harley's for 20 years and there is no way I would do it. We have friends that live down the street that did and they ended up having to medi vac her and her son back to the states when they got into traffic and were force off the road and into a stone wall. The traffic rules are very different and if you were to get into a fender bender, you could miss your ship while the local police hold you for questioning...

Take a taxi, go on an excursion.. walk down the shopping district, but for god's sake DON'T buy some beer, rent a vechile and go for a ride in a foriegn country!
