Don't look to be stopping at Costa Maya anytime soon. According to this report the pier was destroyed and 50% of the infrastructure was also heavily damaged.
As soon as I responded on this thread on the other chat-area, I tried to edit my response but it locked-out and moved.
Okay you guys. I'm a boob.
As soon as I posted my message I realized the information was about Mayan Riviera in general, not specific to Costa Maya.
HELP!
It is really a shame that Costa Maya was wrecked. I personally don't care too much for the place but many do, and of course the money and jobs it provides to the local economy is the prime issue here. While they are optimistically saying 6 to 8 months, most realistic estimates put the place "out of business" for a year or more.
I'd like to see the 5-day cruise out of Mobile (Costa Maya and Cozumel) go to Progreso/Merida as an alternate to the Costa Maya port. As it is now, it looks like I would have to travel to dreary Galveston if I want to see Chichen Itza. After Costa Maya is ready, it could switch back to that port. Something tells me that Calica will be the alternate port, though. Crystal ball, anyone?
Oh for sure they will be using Calica for the 5-day runs now, although I think they got a glimpse of another option last weekend with the switch to Key West and (ho-hum) Freeport. How about Key West and Cozumel? I think I can see that one happening too.
I guess this means we won't be visiting there in December. I wonder where we will go instead? Was supposed to go to Costa Maya, Grand Cayman, and Ocho Rios.
