Dominican Republic need advice

Who has been to this port? We are going to Catalina island and Casa de Campo. I have been told by some it's dangerous here don't leave the ship. Others say it's beautiful. Im interested in the amphibious vehicle to the Chavon River tour, the trip to Santa Domingo or the Kandela show.Or I could just spend the day at the beach on Catalina island owned by Costa. If anyone has done these or been here please advice.

I was there about a year ago and felt safe. Catalina Island makes for a great beach day, but I would couple it with the evening Kandela folkloric show for a fantastic port day. The show is performed in the outdoor amphitheatre of Altos de Chavon, a cultural village perched above the Chavon River. The view is awesome and craft workshops, artist’s studios, galleries, shops and restaurants line the cobblestone streets. Not to be missed! (At least in my opinion).

Thanks Nancy, I've heard great things about the Kandella show. Would the shops here be open in the evening?
