Ports

I know this is a stupid question, but I have never been on a cruise and I am planning on taking the Carnival Western Caribean cruise which stops at 4 ports. Does the cruise ship actually pull up to the dock at each port or do you have to transfer to a smaller boat to come to shore?

Whether a ship can dock or whether it anchors off a port and tenders have to be used, depends not only from port to port but also from the number of ships visiting the port on a particular day.
