Has anyone boarded the ship in San Juan,checked in and then left the ship to explore old San Juan? Cass Frankenstein said he called the cruise line and they said we can but I would like to hear from someone who has actually done it. This could be possible since the ship only leaves port at 10:00 PM and not at 4:00 PM as is the case in Florida. Thanks !!

We've done it with Royal Caribbean, with no problems. You are checked in and that is all that matters. They don't expect people to be captives on the ship when it doesn't leave until 10pm. We haven't done them, but I think the ship will even have tours running on embarkation day.
Yep, you can come and go as you please up until the deadline they set for being back. When I was on AOS in September they had large signs saying you needed to be back to the ship by 7: pm and mine left at 10: pm as well. I noticed, watching from the balcony that several people came back well after the posted time and didn't see anyone turned away but I would not advise this.
Most guests come back in time for dinner anyway. And I recall it was nice to hit a couple of the ship's bars after dinner and then go on deck to watch the night time sailaway.

The published boarding time for San Juan is 2:30pm. I've not sailed with Carnival out of this port so I can't say when boarding actually starts. Like most places, I assume it would be at least an hour earlier than that. Hopefully someone with better experience with Carnival in San Juan will chime in.
