This is my first ever cruise. I am going on RCCL's Sovereign 03/03/06 to Nassau and CocoCay. My question is about shopping in Nassau. We plan to only shop a little in Nassau then get back on the ship and wait to do the "beach thing" at CocoCay. Granted there are better prices to be had in other Caribbean destinations, but are there any cant-miss shops on Bay Street that anyone can recommend?
Also, I'm trying to fill a new humidor I recieved for Christmas with cigars. I plan to purchase quite a few in Nassau if I can find them. I understand you cant bring Cubans back to America, but are there Cubans for sale in Nassau? If so, what are the normal prices? And are you allowed to bring them back on the ship to smoke?
Nassau if full of jewelry stores and T-shirt shops. The ship will have a port talk and tell you what stores they recommend and what you can find at those stores. You can buy Cuban cigars in Nassau and yes, you can bring them on the ship and smoke them in the open area. You cannot bring them back into the United States. I was just in Nassau last Saturday, a person traveling in my group bought some Cuban cigars. I am not certain how much he paid for them. I want to say $10 and up.
The ship won't take Cuban cigars away from you, but you do need to be quite wary of counterfeit Cuban cigars which are everywhere. Frankly I think Cuban cigars are overrated and not worth the outrageous prices they go for. I'll take a Honduran or Dominican anyday.
Over at the Atlantis Resort & Casino they had a cigar store you might be interested in. They have a rolling table in the store and some interesting humidors.
I remember seeing a shop with a huge sign that said "CUBAN CIGARS' as soon as I got off the ship. I did not buy any so no idea on the price. I paid about $7.50 for some on Grand Cayman though.
