I've been to Jamaica 5 times (on cruises), I've never been scammed. However, they will always try to push drugs on you, braid your hair, and sell you junk. I would highly recommend not going off on your own or away from an excursion. That being said, on one in Montego Bay, they took us on a bus tour and dropped us off in town to shop. I had some great jerk chicken (best so far), but was ready to get back to the ship. On that particular cruise I was sailing single. I walked around the main part of the shopping area and then went to the stand selling the jerk chicken that was off the beaten path. I quickly realized that was NOT an intelligent thing to have done. I returned back to the main shopping area and took a cab back to the ship. Remember, you are in a foregin country, their laws are not like the US. However, there are plenty of places in the US I wouldn't venture to either. Their government works hard to keep the tourists safe, but just use street smarts. It is a truly beautiful island, don't miss the experience, just use good common sense. Best wishes.
