Western caribbean surfing & safe fun in Jamaica

We're doing the western caribbean cruise (Key West, Cozumel, Cayman and Jamaica). Does anyone know about a good place to rent a board and find a sheltered spot (where the water is not too rough) to go surfing at these locations? It would be for a beginner level surfer, who has already had a basic lesson.

Also, we've read many of the reviews and warnings on this site, regarding Montego Bay. We'd like suggestions of good, safe things our group of adults and teens might like to do when we're there.
Have heard that Sunset Beach is nice, does anyone know the cost to use that facility and whether there is a particular taxi/transportation company that is trustworthy? Have also heard of the Bob Marley center, but can't tell if that would be worthwhile or just another hustle.

We'll appreciate any ideas from you experienced cruisers, or families with teens, who have been to these locations. Thanks a bunch and happy cruising!

Hi cruisingtime, welcome to Cruise-Chat. From your post I take it you're going to Montego Bay and not Ocho Rios. I have never seen the surf very much over ripples in either port. Sunset Beach would probably be your best bet. If you get a cab that is registered with the port, you're going to be pretty safe. When we were there, there was an area right behind the terminal where cabs were waiting. They had to have credentials to be there. Our excursion van was there, we did one through the ship, but there were private vans/taxis there as well. The cautions about Jamaica are very valid, just use good street smarts as you would in any big city in the states. It's just that you're in a foreign country, so it's even more important to be very aware of your surroundings. Jamaica is beautiful and not everyone is out to get you. It's just a shame that a few ruin in for the many. Just stay in the tourist trap areas, with a group of cruisers and you should be ok. Sunset Beach is an all-inclusive, so while I can't be for sure, if there's any possibility of surfing there, they should have rental boards available. Hopefully, someone who has been their recently will see your post and can tell you definitely. Best wishes and Happy Holidays!
