Progresso

Hello! We just booked on Carnival Elation for this August. We are stopping in Progresso and Cozumel. I was actually trying for the Calica stop, but with my schedule decided on this cruise. We have been to Cozumel many times and know just what we want to do. We are not sure about Progresso. I have read mixed reviews. Some say this is a port just to get off and go somewhere else. But the small town looks pretty nice to me. We are thinking of doing a little shopping and hanging out at the beach. Is there anything we shouldn't miss while we are there? We are a little concerned that the beach might not be as great as some other stops. Is there a nearby beach that is better?

If you're into ruins, Uxmal and Chichen-Itza are reasonably close. There's good shopping in Merida and Malecon Beach is close. There's a tour bus that will take you around to the local markets. The prices are supposedly better for shopping there than Cozumel.

We did the Dzibilchaltun ruins excursion and really enjoyed it. The bus ride was short (about 25 mins) and the tour guide was great. This gave us a taste of the ruins and didn't take all the day...about 3.5 hours total. It was worth the money!

We are more interested in a nice beach day. Anyone been to the beach there?

Progresso...

some love it...some hate it...

Be sure to see the flea market, the best of any port I have been to and very good prices.

Ride the double decker bus...$3 for a city tour...but remember to duck when they say duck..

Beach opportunities:
1) Walk four blocks from the Flea Market, and you will find a nice long beach. Not toys or chairs, but some of the Restaurants will have some chairs set up you can rent...beautiful beach, but the water is not the crystal blue and looks more like water you see here in the USA...nice access to food and bars across the street and not a lot of people there. Also, the famous $20 massages can be found here.

2) Slicer Beach Club is about a 10 minute ride from the flea market. I have not been there, but have got great reviews from friends. Very nice quiet beach, pool, (an all you can eat/drink option is available for around $45 a day)

3) Reef Beach Club is a 40 minute ride, but is supposed to have more things to do, and a nicer pool. Also has a buffet. Don't know anyone who has been there, so I am only reading some reviews.
