Alternatives to excursions in Cozumel

Coba Mayan Ruins vs Tulum Mayan Ruins ? ? Differences, similarities, either more impressive than the other? Either have less people visiting? I'm thinking of DH, who has no patience with too many people being "ugly Americans" in other cultures' important places (if you know what I mean?)

Tulum is probably more touristy than Coba since it is closer to the coast.

Usually We rent a car at the pier in Cozumel and take out the additional insurance as offered. There are some fabulous beaches and small beach clubs on the opposite side of the island. We are very careful to avoid consumption of alchohol while doing so as the local policia utilize locals as "spotters" and a stop for DWI can await a rental driver who imbibes! If the Driver does not drink and will refuse the "free"cocktails offered in the gift shops.....Cozumel is quite safe!!
