Freeport.. blah... your best bet is Gold Rock beach or Lucaya. Take the shuttle from the ship ($5 per person) its the quickest route to Port Lucaya. You may have to take a taxi to get to gold rock.

Many people are not thrilled with Freeport. They are slowly (VERY SLOWLY) getting more and more things to do in place but it is still one of the least popular stops for a cruise.

sounds like a great day to enjoy the swimming pool on the ship

I actually think they have fixed up Lucaya really well. Nice shops and Restaurants / Bars. It is much cleaner than it used to be. The Casino is nice as well. They have public restrooms and the beach is right there. The first time I went there I thought we were in the wrong place when we docked as it sure didn't match the brochure pictures. It looked like we pulled up to a coal mine or something. There is one taxi van service that has a discount round trip price I don't recall the name. Anyway, you prepay to go back to the ship and they give you a return ticket. They have a designated place and times to meet to return. My biggest issue was being approached to buy drugs 3 times. This last visit was the first time I wasn't asked if I wanted my hair braided. I had buzzed my hair. :)

Does anyone have suggestions for a good place to eat lunch in Freeport. After 32 cruises I am going there for the first time :)

A co-worker said the Afterdeck was good.

Larry, I'd try over at Lucaya, the hotel there was magnificent. There was a restaurant on the beach that looked quite good. I didn't eat there because I was too busy walking and taking pictures. Then I went shopping.

Macmom, I really think you'll like Lucaya. Freeport is much cleaner and much less traffic than Nassau. I can't wait to go back. In fact, I'd rather go there than Nassau. I know many people don't like Freeport, but they've done a good job in some areas.

The port is definitely NOT nice, but Lucaya is very nice. It's not a long ride at all. The port is strictly industrial, but given time, I'll bet they'll improve that as well.

In Freeport....taxi on over to the Lucayan Market Place for shopping, munching and exploring without overspending. Wander over to the Underwater Explorers society (UNEXSO)...Take the Easy Sport diving Lesson (Inexpensive)..learn Easy Scuba...go out to a shallow Reef and...have a ball!!! The Bar and Grill at UNEXSO is quite nice and reasonable and has a lot of atmosphere!! Having lived on Grand Bahama I always find plenty of things to do there...I'll be back there in two weeks aboard the NCL Sky!!

The Beaches are fabulous!!

Billy, Thank you so much! I was trying to remember the name of that place as the Ship's Crew had recommended it also. I have been over to Paradise Cove to snorkel and it is nice as well. Like you, I can always find something to do on Grand Bahama. Sometimes it takes a little research though. Those Taxi drivers run a close 2nd to the ones on Cozumel for scaring the wits out of you. It is worth it though as it is a beautiful island. People just have to get out there and explore it, and not judge it by where the ship docks. :)

Dwayne.....Next time in Freeport...Rent a Car and go adventuring....Nearby is the Xanadu hotel...where none other than Howard Hughes hid out on the top floor...the Beach there at Dundee Bay is spectacular and uncrowded!! Put on out to the West End....and check out the goings on!! It's a huge island and still ripe for investment and growth...Just watch out for the pot holes and the gravel roads...they'll yank the steering wheel out of Your hands!!

If you judge the port by International Standards the Port at Freeport is quite decent. Most Internationally Known Ports provide dockage in Industrial Areas rather than the more touristy Carribbean Port facilities. At least in Freeport You can disembark at a rather nice looking passenger center with convernient transportation...it is safe and well patrolled, the cab drivers are friendly, knowledgeable and very honest!!.A little research on Freeport in advance of a cruise yields amazing results!!
