We're going to Coco Cay, St.Thomas and St.Maarten.
My parnter is a little concerned about the beaches and if she should wear water shoes at the beaches, because of rocks and rough bits on the beach and in the water. Is it necessary?

Worth their weight in gold. Water shoes are one thing I always pack for the Caribbean. You can get them at Wal-Mart or any dive shop, they even have them on board.
If you don't want to bother with them then don't. Penny gave you a great answer. Are the beaches you are going to covered in jagged sharp pieces of glass? No... But then again I have seen glass on every beach I have gone to. But we wear water shoes for more than just a worry about glass. The coral can be sharp, there are things in the ocean that you don't want to accidentally step on AND most of all, we wear them to and from the beach so that our regular shoes do not get full of sand.
Also, the sand can be very hot. try walking to the bathroom or to the bar without something on your feet. You'll be thankful you have them.
There are a lot of things that are not NECESSARY but you do/use them anyway because they make life better

Ok Jim, there's no need to get snarky. I was just asking a simple question, and Pennys answer was fine..that she always packs them, but it didnt answer my question of whether they were needed or not. I was just looking for a little clarification.
Thanks Penny and Jim for the info.
"Necessary" is subjective so there is no way any of us can answer the question with a definitive answer. It is not a simple yes or no question. To me water shoes ARE necessary. Is it possible to spend a day at the beaches in question and not injure your feet? Yes. Is it also possible that you'd step on a piece of glass or sharp rock? Yes.
It comes down to a personal choice. I don't like to take chances so I wear them.
It wasn't the simple question that caused me to "get snarky" it was the insinuation that Penny's reply was completely useless because she didn't/couldn't tell you if the shoes were "necessary" for you.

I wasnt insinuating that her answer was completely useless, I just wanted a little more information about the topic, so I asked, that's all. Your post gave me more clarification about it, so thanks Jim!
Sorry, Teal, didn't mean to not answer correctly. To me, yes, they are necessary mainly because we do a lot of snorkeling and there's lots of things I don't want to step on. It also saves me from packing a bunch of shoes, flip-flops or sandals. I take one pair of dress shoes, wear my tennis shoes on board, and take my water shoes. I just wear my water shoes in port and wear my other shoes on the ship. Hope this helps.
