Well, after being advised that we should book our own airfare and arrive a night before, we are looking in to hotels at San Juan.

BTW - we actually got really good rates down to San Juan by splitting up the trip. We are using JetBlue on the way down for $85 pp and American Airlines on the way back for $227 pp.

Back to the hotel... We would like to stay in a hotel that offers shuttle service from the airport. Something else we are looking for is a hotel relatively close to the pier (at least half way between airport and pier, so the taxi ride doesn't cost much).

Thanks so much for your advice! These message boards are great! I have been on them for less than a month and have received so much info!

hi heather
we stayed in San Juan in october. We did extensive research trying to find a good hotel as well, since we heard "beware... some are awful". No hotels offered a shuttle service from the airport. We hopped in a taxi and he took us the short drive to the 'Carib Hilton.' This was a very nice resort with several resturants and pools. It was a bit pricey compared to some of the others ($200 something a night) but was nice. When we got off the ship (we cruised on Princess) we learned we had to take a taxi to the Wyndahm of Old San Juan. Princess ships were docked on the south Pier. RC and Carnival had a dock on the north pier and made it possible to actually walk to the hotel. (traffic was congested though). If you wanted to stay a day and tour the city some, I highly recommend the Wyndam of Old San Juan so you can walk around. The city is awesome and is best experienced on foot. Another really nice hotel we found was called the El Convento but at that time they wanted us to book two nights. Hope this might have helped some.... enjoy your trip.

Thanks for the info Lyn. We are trying to find something a little cheaper, but still in Old San Juan.

Anyone know how the Holday Inn Express (at 1 MARIANO RAMIREZ BAGES CONDAD SAN JUAN) is? How close to the pier is it?

What do we do with our luggage when we have to check out and until we can board the ship?

When do they let you board the Adventure?

Joanie and I really enjoy the El Convento Hotel. It is a tad more expensive than you are looking for, but it is really a memorable experience.

Thanks for the info Tom. Unfortunately, our plane does not get in until 1 AM, so we really just need a clean, quiet place to sleep until we have to checkout.

What ever you do --- do NOT stay at the San Juan Beachfront hotel! American Airlines put us up there because of difficulties getting our flight out last June. It was just awful. Very diry and run down. We stayed at the San Juan Marriott earlier on that same trip and it was wonderful. Booked thru American Airlines for about $200 and it was a beach front! Good luck.

The Holiday Inn Express is very basic. Rooms are pretty small, but clean and in a decent area. You might also consider checking out the Radisson Ambassador - much nicer property, but still reasonably priced.

Thanks Hickster and Nancy. I've done some research and the Holiday Inn Express is $112 ($127 after taxes) and the Radisson is $170 ( $200 after taxes) for a Saturday night. The Radisson's cancellation fee (before 4 days prior) is $25 and the Holiday Inn Express' is the entire night, so we are going to wait to make a reservation.

Thanks everyone for the advice!

Does anyone know when Adventure lets you board?

Heather

You should be able to board by about 2 pm. But since you have a concern about your luggage, just head to the port when you check out of the hotel and check your luggage with a porter. You may be lucky and be able to get on board early, but if not, you will have divested yourself of your bags and can explore San Juan.
